Job Overview

We are looking for a friendly, confident and experienced sales assistant who is passionate about helping to bring wildlife, nature, and the magic of books come to life for our customers. Equally, we are looking for someone who will take a genuine care of the shops visual merchandising and day-to-day operations.

As a Part-Time Bookshop Sales Assistant you will provide excellent customer service, ensuring a welcoming environment for every customer. You will actively support the day-to-day operations of the bookshop, checking and processing deliveries, restocking shelves, keeping the shop clean and tidy while providing customers with a wonderful shopping experience. Whether you’re recommending a field guide, helping someone find the perfect gift or sharing the joy of a beautifully illustrated kids book with a young reader, you’ll be part of a welcoming team that celebrates curiosity, connection, and the wonders of the natural world.

Hours

This is a part time position. We are looking for candidates with flexibility to extend hours to cover staff sickness, holidays and days when we need extra help, with weekend & evening working.

Key Responsibilities (non-exhaustive list)

• Welcoming customers, providing a friendly, positive customer
  experience and a knowledgeable service.
  
• Offering tailored recommendations on wildlife and nature books and
  gifts to customers.
  
• Accurately taking customer payment, handling cash and card
  transactions, and processing sales using the Shopify POS system.
  
• Assisting with visual merchandising and keeping the books and other
  displays neat and tidy, and dusted.
  
• Replenishing and rotating stock throughout the day while ensuring high visual merchandising standards are kept up and displays are kept looking full. 
• Receiving, unpacking and processing deliveries onto Shopify with accuracy.
• Assisting with openings and closings.
• Assisting with event set-ups, moving furniture and lots of chairs.
• Helping to fulfil and pack online orders to ensure quick and accurate, well packaged delivery.
• Helping to maintain a clean and tidy shop at all times.
• Shared cleaning of communal staff areas.
• Working flexibly as part of a small team.

Person Specification
Essential:

• 2 years+ recent retail experience in a shop setting.
• Strong sales skills.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.
• Friendly, approachable, and enthusiastic.
• Responsible, reliable and punctual.
• High visual aesthetic style for visual merchandising.
• Good attention to detail.
• The ability to work to your own initiative and follow instructions.
• Availability to work weekends.
• Flexibility to work extra days and evenings as required.
  
• Must enjoy reading wildlife books.

Desirable:

• Experience with Shopify POS systems.
• Experience in the wildlife and/or book selling industries.
• Experience adding inventory into stock inventory programs.

Wild Fungarium is a wildlife specialised gift & bookshop, as such it is imperative that candidates have their own genuine and evident interest in wildlife. Being a part of a small team, you will play a big part in maintaining the customer experience and the day-to-day running of the shop, so we are looking for candidates who are responsible, reliable and punctual. Please note, this is a physical role that requires carrying boxes, standing for long hours, stacking shelves, the use of step ladders, going up and down a set of stairs, breaking down boxes, hoovering, moving furniture and carrying multiple fold-out chairs up/down from the basement during events.
