Easy for some and elusive for others, a good night’s sleep is essential for a healthy and happy life. Most of us experience occasional difficulty sleeping, but fortunately there are plants that can help.

The Sweet Dreams Garden is a selection of our favourite herbs that over the years have been found to support a good night’s sleep. Technically known as nervines, or hypnotics (from the Greek word ‘hypnos’, meaning ‘sleep’), they have a range of effects on our nervous system. Gentle herbs such as chamomile and wood betony help ease tension and calm mental chatter, while stronger herbs, such as valerian and California poppy, work on deeper layers of relaxation.

As well as helping support a good night’s sleep, a fresh cup of herbal tea is a wonderful way to unwind after a long day or take the edge off in stressful moments. This diverse and colourful selection of plants will enhance any garden, and some – especially motherwort and wood betony – are also much loved by bees.
